Freddy’s back this week! Although it’s hard to think of anyone else filling Robert Englund’s shoes, we have a feeling Jackie Earle Haley might just be the one to bring a new creepiness to the old bad guy. But we’re more excited to see Rooney Mara, in the role of Nancy Thompson, fight back against the terror that is Freddy Krueger.
Rooney Mara was born as Patricia Rooney Mara in 1985. Both of her great-grandfathers founded football teams: Art Rooney founded the Pittsburgh Steelers and Tim Mara founded the NY Giants (who her father works for). She has three siblings, one of whom is actress, Kate Mara. Rooney caught the acting bug by watching old movies with her mother and attending musical theater performances. She acted in some student films and “Romeo and Juliet” while attending New York University, where she studied international social policy and non-profits.
Rooney Mara truly became a Sci-Fi Babe during her first acting gig in the straight to video horror flick, “Urban Legends: Bloody Mary.” This led to some work in television, including guest spots on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” and “ER.” Her first movie role was in “Tanner Hall” in 2009. It was that year that she officially dropped her first name Patricia and became Rooney Mara. Film roles in “Youth in Revolt” and “Dare” followed.
It seems like this fresh-faced cutie is definitely on her way up in the world. “Filmmaker” magazine even put her on their “25 New Faces of Independent Film” in 2009. Rooney also focuses on giving back by overseeing the charity Faces of Kibera, which provides food, housing and medicine for the orphans living in Kibera, a slum in Nairobi, Kenya. This girl has not gone Hollywood (she moved to LA in 2007)!
We definitely look forward to Rooney Mara screaming and fighting back against Freddy in “Nightmare on Elm Street.” We think this hottie has great potential and we hope we get to see her as a Sci-Fi Babe many more times in the future!
